Now that is a fine question.....
At the 100,000 foot level, I would call FoW the 40k of WW2. The game mechanics are very similar (move shoot assault). I would also say that the FoW ruleset is *much* better written than GW's. Not wanting to get into any bashing, I will leave it at that.
I have been playing FoW for about 4 years now. There is a large contingent of players based out of Table Top, although there are others at 31st Century (like myself). The TT contigent are recognized by BF as one of the playtest groups.
I think the models are fabulous.....some of the infantry leaves a bit to be desired on facial details, but the armore is outstanding. BF has no limitations on use of other manufacturers models, so I often mix in other stuff to get different poses etc.
Price of an army can vary widely depending on what you run (just like 40k), but you will find that it runs about half of what a 40k army would.
There are 2 sources for instructions......
They have a "Boot Camp" online to intro the game at:

Or you can take a look at the Open Fire! starter box. Much like the start boxes by GW, it is a great deal to get started.
For Demos, you have a couple different options. Phil is great about doing them at TT, or I can give one at 31st Century. I do not work for 31st or BF....just a fellow gamer, but I don't mind doing it (Phil would likely give you a better one though

).
Whether you like the game or not I think will come down to imagery. If you like the WW2 era, I think you will find FoW a great game......if you prefer the Sci-Fi genre, then 40k is probably your thing. I did both for awhile, but found game play in FoW to be *much* better. I stick with 40k for the storyline and that is about it......have played only a handful of 40k games in the last couple years.
