Default Blood Angel Project Log

Since Lance and Candace both had the grace to call me out about my painting (or lack of) in another thread, I decided I must defend my honor and get my ass back to work. Now that I've found an easier way of painting the red, it's time to start working on my Blood Angels army. Many of you have seen it in it's sorry condition, but for those who haven't, most of what I have painted is simply red, with little or no shading or highlighting. The rest of the army is just grey and sitting on the shelf waiting for a little love to fall their way.

Enough I say! No longer will my favorite army be neglected in favor of other pursuits! It's time for the boys to get a fresh coat of paint and a new update to their look. I'm going to pull the whole army out and take pictures of it, both before and after, and I'll update this post with them as I go along.

Edit: I finally got the army out to take pics of it. While there are things that still aren't assmebled, this is the vast majority. Ok, here we go:

These first two are pics of the army as a whole. WYSIWYG for the infantry and vehicles is right at 11K points.

The rest of them are closer shots of the various squads and vehicles.

Currently the list looks something like this:

(11) 10 man Tactical Squads
( 3) 10 man Devastator Squads
( 3) 10 man Assualt Squads
( 2) 5 man Assualt Terminator Squads
( 6) 5 man Terminator Squads
(10) 5 man Scout squads
( 7) Captains with assorted weapons and armor
( 3) Librarians with assorted weapons and armor
( 4) Chaplains with assorted weapons and armor
( 1) Dante with 5 man Honor Guard
( 1) Corbulo
( 1) Mephiston
( 1) Land Raider Crusader
( 2) Baal Predator
( 3) Predators with Autocannons
( 4) Rhinos
( 3) Razorbacks with Lascannons
( 9) Dreadnoughts with various weaponry

First up, I went digging through my half finished box and came up with some Assault on Black Reach Terminators. The process is simple: Assemble the model, spray prime it flat black, spray it with Army Painter brand red spray paint, and then coat the model liberally with a 50/50 mix of Baal Red and Devlan Mud washes from Citadel. After that, paint the details and I'm done. Here are what the first two Termies look like after the sprays and the wash:

All that's left is to pick out the details and seal the model. I'll post more pics as I go along.

Believe it or not, I actually did pick up a brush and paint today, though I didn't get far before FRAG work pulled me away. I went through and painted and the skulls, the chest eagles, and the crux terminatus on both models in a light coat of Dark Flesh to act as a basecoat for the bone color I'll be highlightinng them in. I'd post pictures, but quite frankly it hard to distinguish between the dark red and the brown in pictures. More soon...

I didn't get any work done on the terminators yesterday, as I spent my painting time working on terrain for FRAG. So today, I made it a point to devote a little more time to them than usual. I managed to finish the storm bolters, with the exception of the wing design on the sides, as it will be the same bone color as the chest eagle, crux terminatus, etc. As for those, I gave them all a second coat of Dark Flesh to even out the color some, then put the first thin coat of Commando Khaki on them as the first of my highlighting colors to bring them up to the eventual bone color. I also went ahead and blacked out the eyes while I had the color out. Below are pics of the models as of now:

If things continue to progress at this rate, these guys should be done tomorrow or Friday. I'm supposed to have some Army Painter Blue Primer coming in this weekend. If it shows up, I'm going to jump over to the Eldar and do a couple of Dire Avengers, then come back to more terminators after that.

Tonight I put the final highlights of Bleached Bone on the chest eagle and misc other parts, then washed all of them with Gryphonne Sepia to blend the colors a bit. Then I used a quick coat of Scorpion Green for the eyes, and presto! Two finished terminators With a simple and easy to duplicate paint scheme that still look good on the battlefield. I've still got to do the sealing and basing on them, but here's what they look like currently...

I've got some resin bases sitting around that I'm planning on using for these guys, so tomorrow I plan to paint two of them, pin the models to the bases, and seal the whole lot. While I'm at it, I should probably re-position the arms and glue them down as well.

Sweet jesus man you have enough to field 3-4 well painted armies. Nice job.

Much to my eternal shame, I once again let this project lapse a bit. I've come back and messed with a bit here and there, but I really haven't done much. I started painting one of the AoBR Drednoughts and got the base coating and inking done, then started on the detailing. Then I got totally derailed from that and built an assualt squad with magnetized jump packs and sprayed the black primer and red basecoat on them. Other than that, nothing.

But the new BA Codex is due out in 2010, so that should motivate me to do some more work on them, at least enough to repaint a playable army. I'm planning on doing at least a little work on the Dred or the Assault Squad tomorrow, and if they don't clear the road some I'll have to skip the Apoc game, so I may get a lot of work done but we'll see. At the very least I'll get pics taken of where I am with the Dred and the Squad and get them posted.
